When the war began in 1914, the French cavalry would have been hard to distinguish from those of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 with their colourful uniforms, and in the case of the Cuirassiers and Dragoons, brass helmets. However, by 1918, like much of the rest of the French Army they had taken on a more subdued look having adopted horizon blue uniforms (or khaki in the case of the Colonials) and Adrian helmets.

At the beginning of the war there were 12 regiments of Cuirassiers (traditional breastplate wearing heavy cavalry), 32 of Dragoons (heavy cavalry), 21 of Chasseurs a Cheval (mounted rifles by name, but light cavalry by role), and 14 of Hussars (traditional light cavalry). In addition to these metropolitan French units, there were also five Regiments Chasseurs d’Afrique (European manned colonial light cavalry) and seven Regiments of Spahis (native manned colonial light cavalry) serving on the Western Front.
