Another variant of the Mark V was the Mark V* (read aloud as ‘Mark 5 Star’). This version of the Mark V was lengthened to carry a section of soldiers as an early attempt at an armoured personnel carrier. In this role it only saw limited success due to the fumes and rough ride. At the end of the journey the passengers were usually in no fit state to immediately enter combat, being dazed and sick from the journey to the combat zone. The wearing of gasmasks gave some relief, but more work needed to be done. The extreme length of the Mark V* did give it excellent trench cross abilities, but made it harder to turn. Like the Mark V, female, male and hermaphrodite variants all saw service.
