The Mark V tank was an improved version of the Mark IV tanks. Mark V tanks began arriving at the front in May 1918 in time to take part in the final offensives against the Germans. The Mark V improved on a number of issues discovered during the operation of the Mark IV tank in 1917.

The Mark V tank had improved reliability and only required the one driver, unlike the Mark IV. It had a more powerful engine, which didn’t greatly improve its speed, which was 5 mph (8 kph), but meant there was less strain on the engine, reducing breakdowns.

The Mark V tanks still had a similar weapons layout to the Mark IV with a weapons sponson on each flank. Like the Mark IV, the sponson could be the machine-gun variant mounting two .303 in Hotchkiss Mk 1 machine-guns (a change from the Lewis guns used by the Mark IV) in each, or gun variant mounting a OQF 6 pdr gun and a single .303 in Hotchkiss Mk 1 Machine-gun. Female tanks had two machine-gun sponsons, while male tanks had two gun sponsons. The Mark V also saw the deployment of a hermaphrodite variant with one each of the machine-gun and gun sponsons. In addition to the sponson weapons, the Mark V also mounted another three .303 in Hotchkiss Mk 1 Machine-guns, which could be fired from ports in the sides, rear, and front of the tank.
