The perforated barrel of the 105mm cannon protruded past the shattered window, with Andor's tattered camo cloth draped across it. He had worked different strips of cloth looted from dilapidated cottages at each camp they made. Andor swore that it would bring them good luck - hopefully better luck than those who had owned the material previously. Clattering tracks reverberating off the narrow passages, and gouts of diesel exhaust announced the arrival of the enemy long before they were visible across the debris-strewn village square. Bursts of machine-gun fire from the covering infantry platoon caused the Russian troopers accompanying the enemy tanks to scatter. The cacophony of war sounded as both sides escalated the small arms fire.

The first T-34 nosed ahead, its barrel traversing before delivering a 76mm high-explosive round into a church, destroying the machine-gun nest embedded there. Károly instructed his gunner to take the shot, and Andor's good luck held as his first round bored through the turret flank. The tank shuddered sideways and stopped as hatches clanged open, the crew scampering away from the disabled vehicle. Soviet Shturmovik aircraft flew overhead, their guns clattering as they raked the reserves to the rear. Another Soviet tank, a SU-85 assault gun, crashed through a broken wall and slewed sideways - questing for a target. It was too oblique for Andor to lay the gun on it, so Károly was yelling at his driver to rotate the hull and bring them to bear.

The Russian gunner fired first, the armour piercing shell shearing off the entire side panel of skirt armour that screened the Zrínyi flank from infantry anti-tank weapons. Andor's return shot wrecked the enemy gun mounting, rendering them no threat. It reversed rapidly leaving the enemy infantry to the mercy of their 105mm HE fire. It seemed that the good luck stitched into the camo had saved them for another day.
