The ME 262 Schwalk ('Swallow' in German) was the world's first operational jet fighter. It represented a generational leap forward in aircraft development, mounting two Junkers Jumo 004 axial-flow turbojets in a swept swing arrangement that heavily influences the development of later jets like the MiG-15 and the F-86 North American Sabre. Fortunately for the Allies delays, limited numbers, reliability issues, and lack of fuel reduced the potential impact of this futuristic machine. For all their individual lethality Me 262s could only inflict pin prick attacks on the giant Allied aerial armadas over Germany in the closing years of the war.
