After the successful campaign against the Senussi, Italian troops guarding the frontier knew a lot about fighting in the deep desert. What's more is that the Italians began building modern roads to supply the remote outposts as well as airfields to fly in supplies and operate air patrols. Finally, this also gave them the opportunity to chart accurate maps of the deep desert.
