Aachen is a battalion/company level game of the US Army's assault on the ancient Germany city of Aachen in the fall of 1944. Originally published in 1983 by People's Wargames, the map and counters for this edition have been completely redone and the rules streamlined. Designed by Jack Radey and Winston Hamilton, Aachen has four scenarios: VII Corps Attacks, September 12-22; XIX Corps Attacks, October 7-21; and the Aachen Campaign, September 12-October 21. Map scale is ½ mile pre hex, and each day of historical time is divided into 5-6 "impulses." The rules feature morale, special weapons and units, attrition, armor and anti-tank effects, fortifications, weather, limited intelligence and more.
Aachen was considered a key objective by both sides, and the battle was a close run thing. The game system rewards skilled play with victory frequently not determined until the final turn.
Game components include one 22 x 34 inch map and 500 die-cut counters. The game is designed for two players, but can also be played solo. Playing time is 4-25 hours depending on scenario chosen.
