The M4 Sherman was the most numerous battle tank used by the United States and some of the other Western Allies in World War II. Of the many Sherman variants, the M4A2 was one of the few with a diesel engine. Most of the approximately 8000 M4A2 tanks produced were employed by the United States' allies. However, the Marine Corps did field them in the Pacific, when the smaller M2 light tank proved to be inadequate.
