Faced with the fact that the R-2 had to stay in active service, the Romanian Army decided to convert the vehicle into a self-propelled gun armed with a captured Soviet 76mm.

The project was entrusted to Colonel Constantin Ghiulai, who had conceived the TACAM T-60. The first prototype of the TACAM R-2 was built between July and September 1943 and by early 1944 it was decided that 40 R-2 tanks would be converted to TACAMs.

The TACAM R-2 was armed with the Soviet 76mm ZIS-3 gun with either Romanian or German made gun sight and fired Romanian Costinescu ammunition (both AP and HE) rather than the original Soviet ammunition. The gun was mounted in a three-sided fighting compartment that was roofed to provide overhead protect for its crew.

The TACAM R-2 enjoyed the same performance as the R-2 but the fighting compartment gave it an unavoidable high profile and the overhang created by the length of gun barrel made trench crossing awkward. The gun was adequate for dealing with the T-34 at ranges of around 500 metres but by the Spring of 1944 the Red Army was fielding the heavy IS-2 tank and the 76mm gun was deemed inadequate for dealing with such a threat.

A proposal was put forward to up-gun the remaining chassis with the excellent TAC 43 Reşiţa 75mm gun or the German ‘88’ but with Romania’s defection to the Allies on 23 August 1944 no further consideration was given to the proposal.

Features:
-
-These miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted
-Flames Of War miniatures are 15mm in scale.
Flames of War: Romanian R-2 Tank

The Romanian Army started a modernisation program in 1935, as part of that program 126 Skoda LT vz.35 tanks were ordered from Czechoslovakia in August 1936. The first 15 tanks received in May 1937 proved problematic and were sent back for modifications to make the tanks more suitable for Romanian conditions.

By 1939 all 126 modified R-2 Tanks had been delivered. The Romanians tried to order another 382 tanks from the now German controlled Skoda works in the middle of 1939, but the Germans denied their request.

The 1st Tank Regiment of the Armoured Division was equipped with the R-2 during the campaigns of 1941-42. The unit proved very successful against the disorganised Soviets in the early days of Operation Barbarossa, the Armoured Division spearheaded the assault on Kishinev. At Odessa, however, it suffered heavy losses supporting the infantry during the battle for the Black Sea port.

By the end of 1941 26 R-2 tanks were lost and in 1942 Germany agreed to deliver 26 almost identical, but used, Panzerkampfwagen 35(t) to replace the losses. The Armoured Division reorganised and rebuilt behind the lines during August 1942, and was attached to the 3rd Romanian Army defending the Don River Bend.

Field test against captured Soviet T-34 tanks soon proved that the R-2’s gun was all but useless against it. With three cars and a locomotive, the guns and support troops of the train can halt any German attack.

The history of Polish armoured trains started shortly after Poland gained independence in 1918. They were one of the most important weapons in the war against Bolsheviks in 1919 and 1920, and the other conflicts that shaped the borders of Poland. Dozens of improvised armoured trains fought between 1918 and 1921.

The armoured trains saw action from the very first day of the war. On 1 September, two FT-17 tanks from train No. 13, Generał Sosnkowski, took part in the defence of Vistula bridge in Tczew. Meanwhile, its train was sent south and reached Ciechanów where fighting was already under way. On the same day armoured train No. 12, Poznańczyk, was operating in support of 56th Infantry Regiment and its fire helped to stop German advance near Cieszków.

The artillery of the armoured trains provided both direct and indirect fire support. Armoured train No. 53, Śmiały, supported the defence of Mokra by the Wołyńska Cavalry Brigade against the German 4th Panzer Division, destroying a number of German tanks with direct fire over open sights. On the other hand armoured train No. 11, Danuta, stopped the advance of German 24th Infantry Division with artillery fire. German counterbattery fire had difficulty in ranging on the constantly moving train.

THIS PRODUCT CONTAINS:

1x resin and metal Locomotive;
1x resin and metal Assault Car;
2x resin and metal Artillery Cars
each with 1x 100mm Heavy Artillery Turret, and 2x 75mm Light Artillery Turret

These miniatures are supplied unassembled and unpainted
Flames of War Early War Poland: First to Fight, Polish Forces 1939

Features
-
-
-
-
-
Flames of War: Early War - Polish Dismounted Cavalry Regiment

The role of cavalry in the modern age was not necessarily to ride down the enemy with lance and sabre, but to use their horses to get to the battlefield and manoeuvre around the flanks of the enemy.
